EXCERPT

If she had been concentrating on the fish and her surroundings, she might have been able to stop it in some way, but she wasn’t concentrating. The force of it knocked her backwards as it came at her. Tearing and ripping. In panic, Marty felt her throat being lacerated, her air choked off before she could scream. Frantically, she clutched for her throat, but she had lost the knife, and now it was being used against her in hard, hacking blows, blows that chopped at her attempt to save herself. And through the pain she felt and heard the knife’s blade slicing into skin and cartilage. And through the blinding flashes of pain, as her body screamed for air, she knew that she was losing. And it was as the flashes became sheets of searing white, filling her vision and pushing her toward unconsciousness, that she saw and knew her attacker. And it no longer mattered. She was losing. . . and she was going to die.
